More than 30 employees from OpenAI and Google DeepMind have filed a statement supporting Anthropic in its legal dispute with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).

The support comes after the Pentagon labeled the AI company a “supply-chain risk”, a designation usually reserved for firms linked to foreign adversaries.

Researchers Challenge Pentagon’s Decision

The statement, signed by more than 30 researchers including Google DeepMind chief scientist Jeff Dean, argues that the government’s decision was an improper use of authority and could negatively impact the artificial intelligence industry.

According to court filings, the dispute began when Anthropic declined to allow its AI systems to be used for mass surveillance of American citizens or autonomous weapons programs.

Anthropic Files Lawsuit

In response to the Pentagon’s decision, Anthropic filed two lawsuits against the Department of Defense and other federal agencies. Supporters argue that the government could have simply ended its contract and worked with another AI provider instead.

OpenAI Deal Raises Concerns

Reports suggest that shortly after labeling Anthropic a supply-chain risk, the Pentagon finalized a deal with OpenAI. The move reportedly raised concerns among some employees at the ChatGPT developer.

Experts warn that actions like these could impact the United States’ competitiveness in artificial intelligence and discourage open discussions about the risks and benefits of advanced AI systems.
